I wrote this song for a friend almost 20 years ago. At that time, she was trying to find her way as an adult, and I wanted to reassure her that it wouldn't matter what she did with her life as long as she was kind.

Lyrics

I am turning twenty-five today and I have to just get where I’m going
Can’t think which direction will take me my way and there’s no way of knowing
My compass is stuck and the stars just tease me up there in the sky
There’s not just a fork but a million ways to try
I am turning over a new leaf today to look at the side that’s not showing
Tracing the pattern I find in the veins I know how it’s growing
There is no such map with an x-marks-the-spot to definitely define
I have to decide but will someone please give me a sign?
I want to know
Which way to go
I could go any way today
I am turning back towards my past today to see which way the wind’s blowing
But all of these flowers are blocking my way--must be the seeds I’ve been sewing
At least now I know that wherever I go I will leave such a mark in my wake
And it won’t even matter which of the paths that I take
I could go any way today
I could go any way today
I am turning twenty-five today and I have to just get where I’m going
Can’t think which direction will take me my way and there’s no way of knowing
